Ben Kearsley

Our Principal Conductor

Ben Kearsley joined Halifax Symphony Orchestra as Principal Conductor in September 2026. A UK-based conductor, violist and educator, his work is grounded in strong orchestral technique, clear communication and collaborative music-making. He was Musical Director of Paddock Orchestra and has held Deputy Conductor positions with Bolton Symphony Orchestra, Airedale Symphony Orchestra, Westmorland Orchestra and Holme Valley Orchestra, alongside guest conducting work with Lancashire Chamber Orchestra and other ensembles across the north of England.

Ben’s conducting career began in 2019 as Musical Director of Congleton Youth Orchestra, where he developed a strong foundation in rehearsal technique, ensemble development and engaging young musicians. Since then, he has led a wide range of orchestral projects, working closely with musicians to raise standards while maintaining a positive and supportive rehearsal environment.

Alongside his work on the podium, Ben enjoys an extensive career as a freelance violist. He has performed with major UK orchestras including the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Philharmonic, CBSO, Opera North, Royal Northern Sinfonia, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and Scottish Chamber Orchestra. He also regularly performs as Principal Viola with Yorkshire Symphony Orchestra, Brigantes and Skipton Camerata. This breadth of experience directly informs his conducting, giving him a practical, player-focused approach to orchestral sound, balance and rehearsal efficiency.

Ben studied at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland graduating in 2015, before completing an MMus with Distinction at the Royal Northern College of Music in 2018. He is also an experienced teacher of violin, viola and piano and now teaches from his own private studio, having previously taught with Wigan Music Service, Junior RNCM, Rossall School and Greater Manchester Youth String Orchestra.
